86% of Denver schools have air, but we need to finish the job.
Progress Made
When I think about my days as a student in Denver Public Schools, memories of warm afternoons and stuffy classrooms come flooding back. The sweltering heat made it challenging to focus and learn. This lived experience, shared by many students in our district, drove my commitment to enhancing our schools’ learning environments.
Since 2019, Denver Public Schools has embarked on a significant initiative — to bring air conditioning (AC) to our schools. In just four short years under our watch, we’ve achieved a noteworthy milestone: cutting the list of non-air-conditioned schools in half. This progress isn’t merely about comfort; it’s about guaranteeing a conducive environment where our children can learn and flourish.
Funding Strain in Denver Public Schools
Every large project comes with its set of challenges. One of our most significant hurdles has been the financial constraints. The district, like many public school systems nationwide, grapples with funding issues. While the desire to install AC systems in every school is high, the financial realities often rein in our ambitions.
Yet, despite these challenges, we’ve managed to bring this much-needed amenity to numerous schools across the district. We’ve done this through Denver voters passing numerous bonds to provide the funding for these projects. It’s a testament to the commitment and resilience of the entire Denver Public Schools community.
The Remaining Challenge
However, it’s essential to acknowledge the work that remains. Thirty-one schools in our district are still waiting for their AC installations. We understand the pressing need, especially in the light of global warming and the increasing frequency of heatwaves. But these projects cannot be completed overnight. They demand meticulous planning, securing funds, and, in some cases, even infrastructural changes to the school buildings.
The Harsh Reality of Global Warming
The impact of global warming on our schools is palpable. Our non-air-conditioned schools bear the brunt, with temperatures sometimes soaring to uncomfortable highs. As someone who’s been in those heated classrooms, I understand firsthand the need for change. Our children deserve classrooms where they can concentrate on their studies, unhindered by the searing heat.
I am hopeful the next Board of Education will finish the job and will build upon the work we have done in my term in office.
Acknowledging Our Journey
While we celebrate the strides we’ve made, we’re equally cognizant of the journey that lies ahead. It’s a journey we’re committed to, ensuring that every student in Denver Public Schools has the best possible learning environment. The strides we’ve made thus far are a testament to our dedication, and while challenges remain, we’ll continue to push forward, always prioritizing our students’ well-being and success.
Let’s keep the momentum going, work collaboratively, and ensure that we create cooler schools to ensure Every Learner Thrives.
