Commemorating the Second Anniversary of the January 6 Capitol Insurrection

--

Today marks the second anniversary of the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol, a dark day in our nation’s history when a mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the seat of our democracy in an attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election.

We also remember the five lives that were lost on that day, including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died as a result of injuries sustained while defending the Capitol. These individuals made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our democracy, and their memory will forever be a testament to the bravery and dedication of those who protect our nation.

On this solemn anniversary, we honor the first responders and the lives lost on January 6, and we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our democracy for all people. Their heroism and bravery will never be forgotten.

In the face of unprecedented violence and chaos, it was the Democrats who stood up for our democratic values and fought to preserve and uphold them. From the House of Representatives to the Senate, Democrats stood united in defense of the rule of law and the integrity of our electoral process.

As we reflect on this somber anniversary, we are reminded of the importance of strong leadership during difficult times. Democrats will continue to work to strengthen our democratic institutions and ensure that our nation remains a beacon of hope and freedom for all people.

It is also important to remember the importance of teaching this moment in history to our students. It is essential that the next generation understands the events of that day and the broader context in which they occurred so that we can learn from them and ensure that something like this never happens again.

In Denver Public Schools, we have a responsibility to educate our students about the foundations of our democracy and the importance of protecting it. We must teach them about the value of peaceful protest and the dangers of mob violence. We must also teach them about the importance of free and fair elections and the role that they play in our democratic process.

By ensuring that our students are knowledgeable about the events of January 6 and the lessons that they hold, we can help to build a more informed and engaged citizenry, one that is equipped to defend and protect our democracy for generations to come. So, it is very important to teach this moment of history to our students in Denver Public Schools.
