Remembering and Recognizing African American Contributions:
As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to remember the painful history of African Americans in the United States. For centuries, African Americans were denied the right to education, and even the ability to read was prohibited by law. Despite these obstacles, the Black community has always placed a strong emphasis on education and has produced many influential leaders who have made significant contributions to our nation.
From leaders such as Harriet Tubman, who risked her life to help enslaved people escape to freedom, to educators like Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded the National Council of Negro Women and worked tirelessly to improve educational opportunities for Black girls, African Americans have always been at the forefront of the fight for education and equality.
In recent history, we have seen leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who inspired a generation with his vision of a just and equal society, and President Barack Obama, who demonstrated the power of education and perseverance to achieve the highest office in the land.
Denver has also been home to many influential Black leaders who have made a lasting impact on our city and its residents. Wellington Webb and Wilma Webb, for example, have been champions of education and social justice, working to improve the lives of all Denver residents. Brother Jeff Fard, an educator and community leader, has been a voice for change and a source of inspiration for many.
I am proud to say that I have also made history as the youngest African American to be elected to public office in Colorado history. This is a testament to the power of education and the importance of having representation at all levels of government. It is my hope that my story will inspire future generations of Black leaders and show that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
In conclusion, I would like to thank the Denver Public Schools Community for its continued support of our schools and for celebrating the contributions and achievements of Black leaders in our city. As we continue to work towards creating a more equitable and just society, I am confident that together, we can make a real difference in the lives of our students and families.
