Rescinding the Healthy Start Times Resolution: A Step Back to Move Forward

As the Vice President of the Denver School Board, I want to take a moment to share my thoughts on the recent Healthy Start Times Resolution that was passed.

When this resolution was first brought before the board, I voted in favor of it because I believed in the science behind it and the potential benefits for our students’ health and well-being. The research shows that later start times can lead to improved academic performance, better mental and physical health, and a decrease in absenteeism.

However, as the resolution has been implemented, it has become clear that the negative impact it has had on our families and educators outweighs any potential benefits. Many families have had to adjust their schedules and routines to accommodate the new start times, which has caused a significant amount of stress and inconvenience.

In light of these challenges and the negative impact on our community, I believe it is in the best interest of our students, families, and educators to rescind the resolution and go back to the drawing board. We need to take a step back, listen to the concerns of our community, and work together to find a solution that truly benefits all stakeholders.

I understand that this decision may be difficult for some to understand, but I assure you that it is not taken lightly. We have to be open to the idea that sometimes things don’t work out as we expect, and that it’s better to take a step back and re-evaluate a situation.

I want to encourage our community to continue to be engaged and to share their thoughts and concerns with us. We are committed to working together to find a solution that truly benefits all stakeholders.

Thank you for your support and engagement in this important issue.
